Wayne-White Electric uses herbicides as part of our integrated vegetation management approach to help keep the rights-of-way clear and accessible in our effort to provide safe, reliable electricity to our members.
Herbicide application within in the right-of-way is a very cost-effective means to develop a clear and accessible right-of-way that has little to no physical impact on the environment. The herbicides used in Wayne-White Electric territories target woody vegetation, while allowing grasses and herbaceous vegetation to remain within the right-of-way. Grass and herbaceous vegetation are great for pollinators, birds, and wildlife browsing or bedding.
Mowing the same locations instead of using selective herbicides can damage wildlife habitat and even cause direct harm to wildlife young or bird nests that are often found in the right-of-way. When mowing utility rights-of-way, studies have shown that this mechanical process will lead to increased brush density which in turn reduces accessibility. These reasons outline why Wayne-White Electric uses herbicides as a tool to maintain the right-of-way.
